Teide - still active volcano!

1706 Eruption: One of the most devastating events occurred in 1706 when an eruption destroyed much of the town of Garachico, reshaping the island's coastline and economy.
1798 Eruption: The eruption of Pico Viejo, also known as Chahorra, began on June 9, 1798, and lasted until September 8 of the same year, making it the longest recorded eruption in Tenerife's history.
1909 Eruption: The most recent eruption occurred on November 18, 1909, at the Chinyero volcano, located on the northwest rift zone of Tenerife. This event lasted ten days and, fortunately, resulted in no fatalities, although it did cause significant local disruption.

Recent Activity

While Mount Teide is currently dormant, it remains an active volcano. In January 2025, increased seismic activity was detected, characterized by elevated carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide emissions. Despite these signs of unrest, no significant ground deformation was observed, and experts have not indicated an imminent eruption.

Cultural Significance

The indigenous Guanches revered Mount Teide as a sacred mountain, and it continues to hold cultural and spiritual importance in the Canary Islands. Today, Teide National Park, encompassing the volcano, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction, offering visitors insights into the island's natural history and opportunities for various recreational activities.

Accessing Teide National Park

From Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the park is approximately an hour's drive via the TF-21 or TF-24 roads. Public buses (TITSA) also operate routes to the park:

Route 348: Puerto de la Cruz to Teide
Route 342: Playa de las Américas to Teide

Activities and Excursions

Hiking: The park boasts numerous trails suitable for various fitness levels. The ascent to Mount Teide's summit is particularly popular.
Cable Car: The Teide Cable Car transports visitors to La Rambleta station at 3,555 meters. From there, several trails offer panoramic views. Note that a permit is required to hike from La Rambleta to the summit.

Reaching the Summit

To access the summit (Pico del Teide), a free permit from the National Park's administration is mandatory. It's advisable to apply well in advance due to limited daily permits. Alternatively, booking a guided tour often includes the permit.
